Censorship and Propaganda-Part 1 how they work
We are currently living in the information era. Intelligence on every single subject is readily available at the click of a button. As information is what amounts to the most critically important resource for our survival, both individually and as a society, the development of technology that led to the general accessibility of that information allowed us the greatest leaps in technological, political and societal advancements in human history.
Let me illustrate this to put things in perspective. Homo Sapiens began emerging genetically speaking some 300 000 years ago. Behavioral modernity began appearing in our specie sometimes between 160 000 to 60 000 years ago. The neolithic happened some 13 000 years ago.We would have to wait until around 3200 BC for the first form of writing, that this, to record information in a systematic form, to appear with the appearance of cuneiform.
It took us nearly 290 000 years since our specie’s first appearance to develop a systematic form of recording information. It will take us another 4500 years to develop a printing press after developing writing. Then two minds would change drastically our ability to convey information. We will then have to wait to 1837 for Cooke and Wheatstone to invent the first commercially usable electrical telegraph. After that, the exchange of information’s speed would begin growing exponentially.
It would all come to a head with Alan Turing’s computer. Say what you will about the man, but he is undoubtedly the father of computers as we understand them today, and I have only the highest amount of respect for him.
290 000 years to develop writing. Less than a hundred years to develop quantum computing. What else will we be able to achieve with such growth of information exchange.
Alas, this free exchange of ideas is hampered by the powers that be, governments and corporations that want to have the monopoly of your mind. With the growth of information came inevitably the growth of methods to curb it. Information, and the free and easy access to said information, is the single most basic tool of true equality. Naturally, as survival is always a competition, those in powers do not want you to be their equals. So they deploy all their resources to prevent you, and that includes restricting your access to information as much as they can get away with.
Both the governments and the corporations are directly guilty of this, one way or another. So how do we combat this. Well, first, we must know what we are fighting. Only then can we begin mounting measures to combat these effectively.
Now, as is usual, the crux of this article will focus mainly on computer based technology and the related methods, however, I must warn you that what I am about to show and explain to you does not stop in the digital world. You can see and hear this censorship and propaganda on the tv, during political speeches, in adverts during the Superbowl, in the newspaper, at work between your colleagues, at the radio. You will also see that while many examples I will provide begin online, they seep in the real world rapidly, like an infectious disease.
Be warned, ye who reads further in this article, this is the time to walk back if you are not comfortable with understanding just how much you have been manipulated. You can take the blue pill, sleep well at night, go back to your life and stop worrying about these things. Or you can take the red pill, and I’ll show you just how deep the rabbit hole goes.
Remember, what I am offering you is the truth. Nothing more.
Methods of Censorship
So, how do the powers that be censor the information you get access to? There are several methods, I shall detail the most common one that are digital below. But first, what is censorship? Well, to put it simply, this is the suppression of speech, public communications and other information. In essence, anything that curbs you ability to exchange information freely is a form of censorship. Something that you are a victim of everyday. The worse part? While some of it is extremely egregious and eye catching, most of it you wouldn’t even know is happening.
Redaction
Redactions are the acts of removing a piece of information outright from a document or a piece of media. They usually happen after the fact, modifications to an article, or those obvious “redacted” federal documents. It may also be the outright banning of a certain topic, or the banning of questioning a topic. Some example of this are for example Wikipedia banning your IP if you ask for a citation for if Yasuke was a Samurai.
Another example, extremely ubiquitous, is the banning of distributing child pornography. This example in particular highlights how not all forms of censorship are inherently bad. But we must remain cautious on what we accept as a criminal offense, like the aforementioned example, and what isn’t. But when the medias and the government begin redacting, for example, the list of people who went to Epstein’s island, a list that is available on the ‘net if you know where to look, then the general population becomes censored to a list of high profile names that have had associations with a known pedophile. While the rest of us, those who know better, get labelled “Conspiracy Theorists”. But I will address that in the propaganda section.
Shadowbanning
Shadowbanning an account or a subject is essentially manipulating the algorithm on the media used to prevent the easy access to said information. You are probably subscribed to a channel on youtube, or following someone on a Social Media or another and suddenly, their posts no longer appear on your feed, or their videos are no longer recommended. That is the end effect of Shadowbanning. This is because the subjects of these videos have no outright banning offenses and doing thus would open up said platform to a lawsuit in which, within their own rules, they would lose.
So instead they don’t ban you, they simply make sure that to see your content, people have to already know your channel, your page etc, and must go out of their ways to access it to see said content. And people are asking me why I avoid social medias like the plague. Well, there’s one reason right there.
Memory Hole
Our final point I will touch on is usually requiring the most powerful and largest of corporations or direct government interference. Just make the information you want to access unsearchable, and then pretend it never existed or never happened. Socialist countries in particular are really fond of that method. The Chinese Great Firewall is one such example. Banning access to certain pages at the Internet Service Provider level means your population can’t even know that something exists or something happened. But it gets so much worse.
On the 13th of July of this year, our national cheetos almost got assassinated. Now, regardless if you support the man or not is irrelevant, but that did happened. Why is it, then, that it is so difficult to access that superbe picture of him, fist raised, blood on his face? Or searching for that event on Google?
Don’t believe me?
This is but one example. Other forms of memory holes are what I have dubbed “malicious omitting of critical information”. This is essentially the action of the media apparatus purposefully failing to include a critical detail, or misrepresenting said detail in their systematic coverage of a subject. Or downright refusal to discuss a certain subject. For example, when was the last time you’ve heard about the Covid’s vaccine? Something that was “a matter of national security” and suddenly, almost overnight, nobody talks about it anymore.
Another example is the candidacy of Kamala Harris for the presidency, and how she got “chosen as the Democrats candidate” without an election. How interesting isn’t it? I would have thousands of examples of this but I think I have illustrated my point here. Memory Holes take advantage of the absolutely insane amount of information we are consuming constantly. Just like how Propaganda works.
Propaganda
Propaganda is omnipresent in our society. It is the act of using communications to propagate and influence an agenda. As it is, inherently, any subject can be propagandized. Positive propaganda, like encouraging people to be their best selves, isn’t a bad form of propaganda. Heck, me repeatedly telling you to do your own research is propaganda. However, this is not the type of propaganda that interests us in this article. I am talking about the systematic, weaponized form of propaganda being used by corporations and the powers that be to influence society in a stagnate state of complacency and obedience. Here are some of its most common methods used online:
Control of Language
The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of Ingsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible.
-George Orwell, 1984
You have seen this. You are seeing this everyday. Words have their meanings expanded far beyond what they were originally intended to describe, definitions are made purposefully vague for terms. “Anti-racism”, “woman”, “sexual aggression” are now subjective terms linked directly to the inherent feeling of how someone chooses to associate it. Or so the propaganda on these terms says anyway. And it is systematically hammered in your head day and night, on forums, on social medias, in shows, and if you dare restrain the meaning of the word, you are a literal fascist, the second coming of Hitler and all. Shame and the public will be levied to testimony against you for being evil. And you do not want to be evil, don’t you? Nobody wants to be evil! So you must strive for good! Therefore you must accept these terms we tell you to.
If you don’t, then all that information you have put up online? Your workplace, your friends, your colleagues, your online accounts, everything can and WILL be used against you. After all. Evil must be destroyed, and you have accepted to be defined, by them, as evil.
Demoralization
Yuri Bezmenov have described this much better than I ever could, and I highly encourage you to find his speeches on the subject. Still, to condense the idea, the best way for propaganda to work is to demoralize you. To show how negative everything you represent, both as an individual and as a society. Evil christian who massacred poor and innocent muslims during the crusades by the hundred of billions, monstrous slavers who are still to this day enslaving the poor “people of colors”. Colonialism, Capitalism, Faith, Beauty, Duty, Honor. All things disgusting and reprehensible. You should feel ashamed to hold any of these things to any value. Only money and the Party are correct. Join the gray goo. It’s okay, you are a blank slate, we’ll rewrite you to be better.
Ever heard these things thrown around? Thrown these accusations yourself maybe? Congratulation. You were part of the apparatus then. Your knowledge of it was completely and utterly irrelevant, just like an intelligent toothbrush being used in a DDOS. Systematically overloading a system to shut it down. Funny how comparable to computers on that aspect we can be.
As you can see, there is no escaping it. We are constantly surrounded by censorship and propaganda. A gilded cage of our own creation to feel safer, with the only cost of giving someone else the key to the cage. If you are on this website, reading this, you have probably already gone throught the initial steps to extirpate yourself from that ouroboros, self-destructive paradigm. This is a good first step. By verbalizing what our real enemy is, in this article, namely, that which wants to control or destroy access to information, we are able to formulate plans to fight back.
Part 2 next week will be all about methods to circumvent censorship and propaganda as much as we can. Give ourselves tools to recognize them, and deal appropriately with them.
The whole world is now staring at you my friend, you who have opened pandora’s box.
You now know.
And they know that you know.
The question is, what is your next move?
As always, we will be watching.
